#GovsGavel: Offense silent in Lady Govs loss at Tennessee Tech

THE LEAD
COOKEVILLE – Austin Peay State University's volleyball team could not overcome a subpar offensive outing in a three-set Ohio Valley Conference loss (20-25, 17-25, 21-25) to Tennessee Tech, Friday night at the Eblen Center.

WHO GOVERNED
Freshman Logan Carger had her second straight errorless outing on offense, recording seven kills on 21 attempts (.333 attack percentage). She added a team-best three blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Austin Peay's offense was at its best in the opening set, posting 13 kills, and helped force seven ties and four lead changes. But TTU used a 6-0 run to take the lead for good midway through the set then closed the frame with four straight points.

Tennessee Tech dominated the match's remainder, winning both the second and third sets in wire-to-wire fashion.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Kelly Ferguson chipped in a team-best nine kills and a .286 attack percentage, but was held to one block. Still, Ferguson has 28 blocks in her eight OVC starts

Outside of the Ferguson-Carger duo, the Lady Govs had five hitters combined for 11 kills and 18 attack errors (minus-.103 attack percentage).

Austin Peay remained winless on the road in 2015, falling to 0-12.

THE FULL RECAP
Austin Peay (6-20, 1-10 OVC) got off to a promising start, recording 13 kills in a see-saw first set that featured seven ties and four lead changes. The Lady Govs were able to build a 13-10 lead thanks to an Aubrey Marsellis kill and a Tennessee Tech error.

Tennessee Tech (6-18, 4-7 OVC) took the lead with a 6-0 run that included three kills by Shealene Little. Austin Peay would close within one point, 21-20, thanks to a pair of TTU errors, but could not get closer. The Golden Eagles closed the first set with four consecutive points, winning 25-20.

The Golden Eagles dominated the second and third sets, leading Austin Peay in kills by a 14-5 margin in the second and a 15-9 edge in the third. Tennessee Tech won both sets in wire-to-wire fashion to claim the match.

Kelly Ferguson led Austin Peay with a nine-kill performance. Logan Carger added seven kills in an errorless attack effort, posting a .333 attack percentage. However, only five other Lady Govs hitters recorded a kill in the match, combining for 11 kills and 18 attack errors.

Cody Todd led Tennessee Tech with a match-best 14 kills. The Golden Eagles posted a 42-27 advantage in kills and a .225 to .055 edge in attack percentage.
