NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University found out why Vanderbilt is a preseason Top 20 team, Friday night. In fact, the Commodores scored the game's first 21 points as the Governors fell, 80-41, in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational.

The contest was the season opener for both clubs and it was evident the No. 18/No. 20 Commodores were in midseason form. With Vandy hitting trio of threes in the first eight minutes and its two 7-footers Damian Jones and Frank Kornet doing the damage down low, the contest was out of reach before Chris Horton hit a layup with 11:39 to finally end the scoring drought

Vanderbilt connected on 58 percent of its first-half field goals, including five three pointers. The Governors made just 7-of-39 first-half field goals (18 percent). Vandy cooled off in the second half, shooting just 33 percent but much of that came late when the Commodores emptied their bench. The Govs slightly improved to 28 percent (7 of 25) in the final half.

Only one Gov scored in double figures and that was senior Khalil Davis, who had 10 points. Chris Horton, who led the Ohio Valley Conference in rebounding a year and ranked eighth nationally at 11.1 rebounds per game, led all rebounders with 14.

Wade Baldwin IV, Vanderbilt's point guard, led all scorers with 14 points while Kornet had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Jones, the All-America candidate, scored 12 points in 16 minutes.

A telling statistic for the Govs was they had just one assist on their 14 field goals while the Govs were unable to block a shot against the much taller Commodores. The other telling statistic was APSU was just 1-of-16 from three-point range.
