APSU track set to return to action this weekend in Bowling Green

CLARKSVILLE – After taking a weekend away from the track, Austin Peay State University track and field team will return to action this weekend at the Hilltopper Relays, hosted by Western Kentucky. One event will be competed Friday (the hammer throw, scheduled for 3 p.m.), with the remaining schedule set to begin 11 a.m., Saturday.

The Lady Govs will be up against some familiar Ohio Valley Conference foes this weekend, with SIU Edwardsville, UT Martin and Murray State scheduled to make the trip to Bowling Green. Mississippi Valley State and Marshall will join the Hilltoppers to round out the Division I competitors in the field.

With only junior Breigh Jones in competition last weekend (she will sit this one out), it should be a rested squad that shows up in Bowling Green for the Lady Govs. Austin Peay has a pair of top-50 long jumpers in sophomores Chancis Jones (48th in the NCAA East Region, 5.76m) and Amia Butler (50th, 5.75m) looking to expand their distances, while another of Austin Peay's talented jumps contingent, sophomore Kaylnn Pitts, is among the region's elite in the triple jump (30th, 12.28m).

Pitts seeks her third consecutive win in the triple jump after winning the event in Austin Peay's last meet, the Vanderbilt Black and Gold. Other standouts two weeks ago in Nashville included seniors Erika Adams, who won the 100m dash with a 12.16 run, and Natalie Olberding, who was runner-up in the 400m hurdles with a season-best 1:02.24 run.

Austin Peay had an excellent day at this event last year, picking up five victories and seeing two school records fall at the Charles M. Rueter Track and Field Complex. Adams was among those excellent outings, setting the school record in the 100m with an 11.81 run to win the event.

Austin Peay will be home for its next two events, at next weekend's APSU Invitational and the one-day Battle of the Cumberland, April 21.
