CLARKSVILLE – Austin Peay State University women's soccer drew 1-1 with Evansville, Saturday, at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field in its final exhibition contest.
Evansville maintained possession throughout the majority of the first half, and led 10-3 in total shots. However, the Lady Govs had a prime opportunity eight minutes into the game. Freshman Jennifer Smith found an opening to the keeper's right, but her try just sailed off the near post.
Four of the Purples Aces shots were taken by Allie Arguello, who put the visitors in front with a goal in the 20th minute. Sara Osinki played a short pass to the feet of her teammate, who finished off the score from the center of the pitch.
Austin Peay head coach Kelley Guth called for better control of the ball during halftime, and the Lady Govs responded by knotting the score in the 55th minute.
After a hand ball on Evansville was called just outside the box, senior Shelby Olszewski capitalized by finding the back of the net on a free kick from 18 yards out. It's the second goal of the preseason for Olszewski, who appeared in just four games last season after suffering a knee injury.
Both sides battled for ownership of the ball in a back-and-forth second half. Freshman McKenzie Dixon fired two long-distance shots in that span, with three total to lead APSU. Olszewski added two shots, both coming in the final 45 minutes. For the game, eight different Lady Govs attempted a shot, four of which were on goal.
Arguello and Bronwyn Boswell each had four shots to lead Evansville.
Sophomore Lindsey Todd played the full 90 minutes for the second-straight game, making two saves for Austin Peay.
The Lady Govs now prepare for the regular season, which begins 7 p.m., Friday, against UAB at home. It will be the first home-opener at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field since 2008.
