CLARKSVILLE - Austin Peay State University women's tennis team fell one point short against Wright State, 4-3, Saturday morning at the Governors Tennis Center.
The Govs opened at 10 a.m., with doubles play, allowing the visiting Raiders to gain an important point. The duo of Lidia Yanes Garcia and Brittney Covington were victorious over Wright State's Tori Turner and Taylor Culberston, 6-3. However, the following doubles matches did not equate to their previous. Hannah Tatlock and Helena Kuppig fell to Karoline Haller and Linsey Verstrepen, 6-1, and Claudia Yanes Garcia and Isabela Jovanovic were defeated by Elaine Cloern and Megan Brdicka, 6-4.
In singles action, the Garcia sisters and Hannah Tatlock gained victories from the No. 1, 2 and 4 positions, respectively. Lidia Yanes Garcia faced Wright State's Karoline Haller and cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 win. Additionally, Claudia Yanes Garcia challenged Linsey Verstrepen and came out with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Following the top two players, Hannah Tatlock edged out Taylor Culbertson, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2.
However, Kuppig, Covington and Jovanovic fell short to three of Wright State's remaining players. At the No. 3 spot, Kuppig battled with WSU's Elaine Cloern, but unfortunately suffered a loss of 5-7, 6-4, 3-6. To follow, Covington and Jovanovic lost to their opponents with scores of 1-6, 1-6 (Covington) and 6-3, 3-6, 2-6 (Jovanovic).
The loss drops the Govs to 1-5 in the regular season. Austin Peay's next match will be March 18th at Eastern Kentucky – the first Ohio Valley Conference dual in 2016.
