Govs seek bounce-back weekend at SEMO, UT Martin

CLARKSVILLE – Austin Peay State University women's tennis team seeks a bounce-back weekend as two Ohio Valley Conference matches await at Southeast Missouri, 2 p.m., Friday, and UT Martin, 2 p.m., Saturday.

The Govs (2-8, 1-3 OVC) dropped back-to-back contests at home last weekend against SIUE and Eastern Illinois, but the young group has shown the ability to win on the road, as evidenced by a 4-2 victory over Morehead State for their first OVC nod.

Twin sisters Claudia Yanes Garcia and Lidia Yanes Garcia have tackled OVC competition with great skill, combining for a 7-1 conference record, including Lidia going 4-0 at the No. 1 singles position. In addition, junior Hannah Tatlock is coming off her second win of 2016, giving her four overall wins this season.

The Redhawks (1-13, 0-4 OVC) are on a 12-match losing streak, with the team's lone victory coming against Chicago State, Jan. 30. SEMO is led by Mariya Kostiuk, who is 10-13 on the year with six of those wins coming at the No. 1 spot.

Saturday's opponent, the Skyhawks (6-10, 3-1 OVC) have a balanced squad, with Sarah Candeloro serving as the No. 1 with a 6-7 record. The Govs and UT Martin faced one another at the APSU Fall Invitational last September, with Lidia defeating Hitomi Naito, 2-6, 6-4, 10-1, to claim the Flight 1 singles title.
