Govs challenge Tennessee in Sunday dual

CLARKSVILLE – For the first time since 2003, Austin Peay State University men's tennis team will challenge Tennessee in a dual match this Sunday in Knoxville. First serve is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., CT.

The Governors (3-7) have played Tennessee six times in program history, with the Vols (6-11) winning all six. However, this will be just the second meeting between the two schools in the Ross Brown era. Five of the six matches in the all-time series were played from 1972 to 1982.

APSU continues to build on its first win of 2016 back on March 25, chalking up two additional victories over Eastern Illinois and Lindsey Wilson since then. The Govs have won each contest 4-3, with the team's improvements in doubles paying off. After opening the season 1-5 in team doubles, Austin Peay has claimed the vital point in four consecutive matches.

The freshmen duo of Chad Woodham and Alex Kartsonis has come on strong as of late, winning three-straight doubles matches. In singles, junior Manuel Montenegro has been a consistent No. 3 player for APSU, racking up a team-leading 3-1 conference record.

The 2016 season for Tennessee has been trying, with the SEC member winless in conference play and losers of seven consecutive contests. However, the Vols are 2-0 against OVC schools, including their most recent win over Tennessee Tech, Feb. 27.

Three players have reached the seven win mark for the Vols – Jack Heslin, Srdjan Jakovljevic and Timo Stodder – while Luis Valero (6-10) is the team's No. 1 player.
