Govs face UT Martin to open road swing

CLARKSVILLE – Austin Peay State University women's basketball team looks to find their road swing rhythm 5:30 p.m., Thursday against UT Martin at the Elam Center.

The Govs are coming off a brief two-game homestand, where they downed Eastern Kentucky 59-45, before dropping a defensive matchup with Morehead State. The Governors' win over the Colonels was the first time that they have held a NCAA Division I program to under 50 points since holding Kennesaw State to 49 points Dec. 14, 2016.

Veteran leadership was on display for the Governors in both matchups last week, as redshirt junior Falon Baker scored a career high 25 points against Eastern Kentucky. She was the only Gov in double figures, shooting 66.7 percent from beyond the arc. The Governors defense was on fire against the Colonels collecting 15 steals and forcing 23 turnovers.

Senior Brianne Alexander showed her versatility on both ends of the floor against Morehead State, scoring 17 points and pulling down 11 rebounds for her second career double double. Alexander has also been nearly perfect from the free-throw line, going 7-for-7 against the Eagles, and shooting 35-for-39 over the last six games.

The Govs have been searching for major bench impact at home, missing the offensive production from junior transfer Michaela Campbell, who missed the last game due to illness. As a team, Austin Peay is averaging 64.4 points per game and shooting 39.9 percent from the field. The Govs dribble penetration is paying off at the foul line where Austin Peay is shooting 74.2 percent.

The Govs are facing a Skyhawks team that is 6-4 in conference play behind the strong play of guards Kenall Spray and Emanye Robertson, both averaging double digits, and persistence in the paint from Janekia Mason, who averages 10.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
