EVANSVILLE— Freshman Maisie Lay finished 15th in the women's 5k race, helping the Austin Peay State University women's cross country team to a fourth-place finish at Saturday's Evansville Invitational.
Lay crossed the line in 19:18.6, just three seconds off her last 5k pace at Louisville. Senior Caroline Kiplagat was next to cross the finish line for the Govs, securing another top-25 finish with a time of 19:50.9 (24th).
Freshman Sarah Martin posted a career-best 20:03.0 and placed 30th. Larin Harr trotted in less than 15 seconds later with a time of 20:17.3 (35th), while sophomore Alura Endres placed right after Harr at 36th (20:25.8).
The duo of Sophia Wilson and Jada Hale used the pack running style and took 38th and 39th with recorded times of 20:39.7 and 20:42.0. Keleah Shell and Madison Morstad also joined Hale and Wilson in some pack running and placed 41st and 42nd at 20:47.4 and 20:49.8, respectively. Freshman Lexie Nicholas placed 49th and timed 21:51.6.
"This young group just keeps getting better. Martin, Endres, Harr, and Wilson all stepped up with career best efforts," said head coach Doug Molnar. "I am excited about the future for this group of ladies."
The Governors are set for bragging rights and all the marbles at the biggest stage, the 2018 Ohio Valley Conference Championship Oct. 27th in Cape Girardeau, MO.
