Govs split regular season matchups with Skyhawks

Box Score

MARTIN, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University women's basketball team dropped a road matchup to UT Martin, Thursday.

UT Martin (11-12, 7-4 OVC) had the hot hand early shooting 56.3 percent from the floor in the first quarter, but Austin Peay (12-10, 5-6 OVC) cut into the Skyhawk lead with a pair of three-point shots from Falon Baker and Keisha Gregory that ended an 8-0 UT Martin run. Brianne Alexander shot 100.0 percent from the floor scoring four points in the opening period.

The UT Martin press rattled the Govs early in the second and third quarters, as the Govs struggled to find offensive rhythm. The Govs were down going into the final quarter.

Austin Peay found their offensive stride in the fourth period, shooting 81.8 percent from the floor scoring 23 points, and going 8-for-8 from the floor to close out the game. The run came too late as the Governors were unable to overcome the UT Martin pressure, falling 100-66 to open their four-game road swing.

Alexander led the Govs with 11 points and five rebounds, while Baker added nine points. Gregory and Brianah Ferby each tallied eight points, with Gregory pulling down three rebounds and dishing out three assists.

Midlick's Musings

Pace of Play: "They sped us up and we took some quick shots, and 12 turnovers in the first along with some lapses in defensive transition allowed them to build the lead to 17 at the half."

Quick Turnaround: "Having a quick turnaround is not a bad thing, we have to let it go. We have to prepare for Southeast Missouri, they played tonight as well, it is an even playing field and we have to bring a lot of energy on Saturday."

Up Next

The Governors will continue their road trek 2 p.m., Saturday at Southeast Missouri.
