Govs can't gain ground in Memphis; Butscher excels as individual

September 18, 2018

MEMPHIS—Austin Peay State University men's golf improved on its Round Two showing but were unable to make any headway on the leaderboard at the Memphis Intercollegiate at Colonial Country Club, Tuesday.

Even though he was not in the lineup this week, senior Sean Butscher's showing will make him a strong candidate for future lineups. Behind a final-round 68, Butscher rose to 16th (77-76-68—221) and sank a team-best 12 birdies over the course of the 54-hole event, including seven on the final day alone. He shot a four-under 32 on the back-nine, including three straight birdies on Hole Nos. 16-18.

Among the Austin Peay lineup, sophomores Chase Korte (76-74-75—225; 34th) and Garrett Whitfield (74-77-76—227; t-37th) led the charge. Korte led the Govs with a 3.00/hole average on par-3 offerings, while Whitfield's 4.75 led the way on par-5 holes.

Freshman Micah Knisley and juniors Alex Vegh and Austin Lancaster closed out the lineup for the Govs. Knisley (74-77-78—229; t-42nd) posted a team-high 37 pars, Vegh (77-80-74—231; 49th) equaled Korte's par-3 shooting and led the Govs with a final-round 74 and Lancaster (76-79-82—237; 60th) shot two-under on the par-4 No. 14 for the tournament, which played as the 10th-most difficult hole on the course.

The Govs will take the rest of September off from competition before returning to the Hummingbird Invitational in Sapphire Valley, North Carolina for the third consecutive year, Oct. 1-2. That tournament will be the midpoint of the five- tournament fall slate for the Governors.
