Govs look to right ship with home opener

CLARKSVILLE - Austin Peay State University men's tennis team looks to right the ship in its home opener against Southern Utah, 12 p.m., Saturday.

The Governors (0-1) are coming off a loss to Middle Tennessee to open their season. Despite going 2-3 against MTSU opponents in the fall, the Govs could not get it going, falling on the road.

The Govs fell in doubles, as MTSU claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.

In singles, MTSU claimed three wins in straight sets to seal the match, but the Govs got good performances from seniors Chad Woodham and Almantas Ozelis. Both players pushed their opponents to the brink, but both ended up narrowly losing the first set by a score of 6-4.

The Govs have never met Southern Utah in the program's history. The Thunderbirds open their season against the Govs before traveling to NAIA program Cumberland and then finish off their Tennessee journey by taking on fellow Ohio Valley Conference member Belmont.
