Govs host Hilltoppers to try and remain unbeaten

CLARKSVILLE - Austin Peay State University women's tennis team aims to stay unbeaten by opening its home schedule against Western Kentucky, 12 p.m., Saturday.

The Governors (2-0) started off strong with two comeback victories against Middle Tennessee and Chattanooga on the road in as many days last weekend.

Against the Blue Raiders, the Govs lost the doubles point, but got wins from Lidia and Claudia Yanes Garcia, Tatiana Lopez, and Helena Kuppig in singles as the Govs won 4-3.

The Govs were not making life any easier after dropping the doubles point again against the Mocs. The team of Lopez and Honoka Nakanishi won at No. 2 doubles easily, marking the first win in a Gov uniform for Nakanishi. However, the Mocs responded with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to put APSU in a 1-0 hole for the second straight day.

The Govs were once again not deterred, with both Yanes Garcia sisters and Lopez winning singles matches to put the Govs one point away from a win. Danielle Morris clinched the victory for the Govs, coming from behind in three sets to keep the team unbeaten.

Opponent Spotlight

The Hilltoppers (0-1) come off a season-opening loss where they were blanked by Kentucky, who is receiving votes in the national poll, 6-0.

WKU and the Govs last met in the 2016-17 season, with the Govs falling, 5-2. However, the Govs only had five healthy players for that match, as they had to concede at No. 6 singles and gave up No. 3 doubles. Kuppig and Claudia Yanes Garcia gave the Govs their points, as each player won in straight sets.
