Postgame Notes: #17 Govs vs. #16 Paladins

GOVS-PALADINS POSTGAME NOTES

Postgame notes following Austin Peay's 42-6 victory against Furman in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Division I Football Championship.

FROM THE TOP

  • Austin Peay won its sixth-straight contest, the second-longest win streak in program history, equaling the streak set by the 1980 Governors. The APSU record is seven-straight wins set by the 1948 team.
  • The Governors 42 points scored are the most scored in the playoffs by an OVC team since the 2015 Jacksonville State team that reached that season's championship game.
  • Austin Peay held Furman without a touchdown, the first time the defense has held an opponent without a touchdown since Sept. 8, 2017 (Presbyterian).
  • The Governors will make their first-ever trip to the state of California to face No. 4 seed Sacramento State in an 8 p.m. (CT), Saturday contest in the FCS Playoffs' second round.

SERIES UPDATE                                            

  • Austin Peay won the first-ever meeting against Furman.
  • The Govs improved to 2-1 against members of the Southern Conference this season.

DEFENDING THE FORT

  • Austin Peay improved to 6-1 at Fortera Stadium this season.
  • The Governors are 14-3 at Fortera Stadium over the last three seasons.
  • It is the Governors fifth-straight home win.

OFFENSIVE SPARKS

  • Austin Peay's 28-point third quarter was its largest single-quarter point total in 2019, topping 24 points accomplished against both Tennessee Tech and North Carolina Central.
  • In his first action since the Eastern Kentucky contest, Kentel Williams caught four passes for a season-best 103 yards, including a third-quarter touchdown that put the Govs ahead 35-7.
  • Williams also ran for a touchdown as part of his 11-carry, 57-yard day. It was the first time this season he has caught a touchdown and ran for a touchdown.
  • JaVaughn Craig completed 18-of-23 (78.3 percent) of his passes. It is the second time this season he has completed more than 70 percent of his passes (Jacksonville State).
  • Elijah Brown's one-yard touchdown reception to open the day's scoring was his first career touchdown scored.

DEFENSIVE STANDS                                         

  • For the second-straight week Austin Peay held an opponent to fewer than 100 yards passing, Furman completing 8-of-15 passes for 82 yards.
  • Austin Peay forced three turnovers (2 fumbles, 1 interception) against the Paladins. It is the sixth time this season the Govs have forced three or more turnovers in a game.
  • The Governors six tackles for loss ended a streak of three double-digit TFL outings. However, it was APSU's ninth outing with six-plus TFLs this season.
  • Kordell Jackson recovered a fumble in the third quarter, it was his ninth turnover secured (seven INTs, 2 fumbles) in 2019.
  • Austin Peay recovered a fumble for the fourth straight game and picked off a pass for the fourth time in the last five games. The Govs have forced a turnover in six straight games, scoring 35 points during that stretch.

SPECIAL TEAMS SPRINTS

  • Logan Birchfied extended his streak of consecutive PATs made to 78. He has not missed a PAT in 2019 (60-for-60), extending his own single-season record for made PATs without a miss. The previous record was 29 PATs.
  • Four the third time this season the Govs punt coverage unit held an opponent to negative return yards, Furman returning one punt for minus-six yards. Opponents have only six punt returns for 28 yards this season.

RECORD'S DOWN

  • Austin Peay's three rushing touchdowns gave it 30 on the season. It is only the second time in program history the Govs have scored 30 rushing touchdowns. The 2017 Govs rushed for 32 touchdowns.
  • The Govs finished the game with 62 touchdowns this season – it is the first 60-touchdown campaign in program history.
  • Austin Peay surpassed 100 tackles for loss with Saturday's performance, becoming the third Governors defensive unit to reach that milestone.
  • JaVaughn Craig became the program's all-time total offense leader, finishing the game with 5,696 career total offensive yards. It broke the record by Brian Baker (5,421, 1998-01). He also broke Baker's record for most touchdowns responsible for in a season, ending the day with 54 (rushing and passing touchdowns).
  • Craig also became the fourth Govs quarterback to pass for 4,000 yards, ending the day with 4,077 passing yards. He also became the program's single-season yardage record holder with 2,831 yards this season. It broke the record held since 1999 by Brian Baker (2,809).
  • DeAngelo Wilson caught his 20th career touchdown pass, joining Govs Hall of Famer Harold "Red" Roberts as the only receivers with 20-plus career touchdown receptions. He has 13 touchdown receptions this season, extending his own record with his TD catch in Saturday's win.
