Taylor takes season's second TSWA honor

TSWA

Men's Basketball | February 19, 2019

LEBANON, Tenn.—Add another honor for sophomore Terry Taylor of the Austin Peay State University men's basketball team, who was named Tennessee Sports Writers Association Men's Basketball Player of the Week.

Taylor averaged 33.5 points and 13.0 rebounds for the week, hitting 55.6 percent (25-of-45) from the floor, 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from three and 76.9 percent (10-of-13) at the charity stripe. He shares this week award with Murray State's Ja Morant; Taylor had 25 points and eight boards in Thursday's ESPN2 matchup with the Racers, hitting 10-of-17 from the floor.

The Bowling Green native put his stamp on the week with a 42-point, 18-rebound effort Saturday at Morehead State. The 42 points represents the most by an OVC player this season and the first 40-point night by a Governor since Derek Wright in a triple-overtime thriller against Southeast Missouri, Jan. 29, 2008. The 18 rebounds were the most by any Division I player in 2018-19 and also were a career-best for Taylor, who posted his season's ninth double-double. Just for kicks, he set the Johnson Arena single-game scoring record by a league opponent and the first point he scored on the evening was his 500th of the season; he's one of two players in program history to score 500 points in each of his first two seasons, joining James "Fly" Williams.

Taylor's honor is his season's second TSWA Player of the Week award; he also won for the week of Dec. 18, joining Chris Porter-Bunton, who won for the week of Dec. 4, as honorees during the 2018-19 season.

Taylor and the Govs are back in the Dunn Center this week to host Southeast Missouri (Feb. 21) and UT Martin (Feb. 23).
