Postgame Notes: Govs vs. Jacksonville State

GOVS-GAMECOCKS POSTGAME NOTES

FROM THE TOP

  • Austin Peay's 52-33 win versus Jacksonville State is the first against JSU since Gamecocks became a member of the Ohio Valley Conference and the first overall since Oct. 13, 1979.
  • The 52 points is the most scored by Austin Peay in an OVC contest since scoring 55 versus UT Martin on Nov. 23, 1996 in a 55-24 victory.
  • The 52 points also marks just the third time the Govs have scored at least 50 points in an OVC contest in program history.

SERIES UPDATE                                            

  • The Govs' home win by the Govs over Jacksonville State is their first since Oct. 15, 1960.
  • The win was the Govs seventh all-time against Jacksonville State, five of those coming in Clarksville.

OFFENSIVE SPARKS

  • With his three rushing touchdowns, senior quarterback JaVaughn Craig ties Sonny Defilippis (1979-1980) for the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback, with 13.
  • Senior running back Kente Williams become the third player in APSU history to record more than 4,000 all-purpose yards, ending the game with 4,174 career all-purpose yards.
  • With his two rushing touchdowns, Kente Williams become the fifth player in program history to score 20 rushing touchdowns.
  • Running back Kentel Williams moved over the 2.500-yard mark rushing, currently at 2,540.
  • Kentel Williams' 173 rushing yards versus Jacksonville State is a team season high for the Govs.
  • After five games, Austin Peay has yet to turn the ball over by a fumble this season, which leads the nation.
  • Quarterback JaVaughn Craig's 72-yard completion to DeAngelo Wilson is his second 70+ yard pass play of the season.
  • JaVaughn Craig's three rushing touchdowns is a team single-game high this season and the first by a Gov since Kente Williams scored three rushing TD's versus Morehead State on Sept. 15, 2018.

DEFENSIVE STANDS                                         

  • Kordel Jackson had his second two interception game of the season. Johnathan Edwards had the Govs other interception.
  • The Governors defense held Jacksonville State to 62 net yards on the ground, marking the fourth time in five games this season the Govs have held their opponents to 62-yards or less.
  • With their four takeaways (3 interceptions, 1 fumble recovery) versus Jacksonville State, Austin Peay now owns a +5 turnover margin this season.
  • Austin Peay scored 17 points off Jacksonville State's turnovers.
  • Austin Peay's defense forced a turnover for the fourth consecutive game. It was their fourth straight game with a fumble recovery and third straight game with an interception.
  • The Governors were credited with 10 pass breakups, Erskin Francis knocking away four passes.
  • Josephus Smith had the Govs lone sack on the afternoon and finished with five tackles, including two tackles for a loss.

SPECIAL TEAMS SPRINTS

  • Senior kicker Logan Birchfield moved into a tie for fourth place all time in career field goals for the Govs with 21.
  • Birchfield had a busy day, taking over on kickoffs early in addition to field goals and extra points. He was 1-for-2 on field goals and converted all seven all PATs. Birchfield also was credited with a fumble recovery when Jacksonville State mishandled a short kickoff attempt.
  • Punter Devin Stuart averaged 39.0 yards on his five punts, placing one inside the 20-yard line.
