As you've likely heard, we don't have any live-action contests to cover at LetsGoPeay.com right now. What we do have is free time; oodles and oodles of free time. Enough free time to swap oodles of emails with various people who would know to create a snapshot of the best athletes in Austin Peay women's golf history. The program's current head coach greets us at the midway point; she was pretty good in her own right, and not that long ago.
Jessica Cathey can do more than talk the talk as Austin Peay's head women's golf coach. She has the credentials to walk the walk as one of the greatest players to come through the program.
Cathey was Austin Peay's scoring leader all four years she competed under the direction of Sara Robson, earning three All-OVC nods for her continued excellence on the course. In her outstanding career, the Hixson, Tennessee native was a top-10 finisher on 16 occasions, including twice at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate and twice at the Ohio Valley Conference Women's Golf Championships, including her freshman season during which she also hit a hole-in-one on the second day of competition.
In her final campaign, Cathey won two tournaments—the home event at Clarksville Country Club and the Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, Illinois during the spring. She was the first Gov in nearly a decade to win the home event and no Austin Peay athlete has emerged victorious at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate since Cathey in 2015. Her 76.57 stroke average as a senior ranked fourth all-time and made her one of four players in Austin Peay history with four seasons with a stroke average below 80.
She could also get it done in the classroom, earning four straight Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar accolades. And now, Jessica Cathey is leading the way for the next generation of Austin Peay women's golf greats as head of the program.
