Men's Golf Greatest Govs | Tough Cuts, Honorable Mentions and More

July 05, 2020

As you've likely heard, we don't have any live-action contests to cover at LetsGoPeay.com right now. What we do have is free time; oodles and oodles of free time. Enough free time to swap oodles of emails with various people who would know to create a snapshot of the best athletes in Austin Peay men's golf history. And as with any list such as this, there were some outstanding performances that merit mention; for the men's golf program, that is especially true.

Mike Cairn earned three top-10 finishes in Ohio Valley Conference Tournament play and represented Austin Peay at the 1973 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships. He also was a three-time Tennessee Intercollegiate All-State choice and was enshrined in the Austin Peay Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991.

Grant Leaver is the only repeat winner of the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate and was both the 2005 OVC Freshman of the Year and a two-time All-OVC choice. He earned five individual medalist honors during his career and represented Austin Peay at the NCAA Chattanooga Regional as a senior. He was inducted into the APSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015.

Brothers Dustin Korte and Chase Korte have both made their marks as Governors. Dustin won a title in 2013 and competed as an individual at that year's NCAA Men's Golf Championships, earning PING All-Region honors and the last of his three all-conference honors. Younger brother Chase is already a two-time All-OVC choice with an all-tournament honor to his credit, and he's got at least one year to go after a truncated junior season due to COVID-19.

David Beard was the 1989 OVC Men's Golfer of the Year to lead the post-Craig Rudolph Govs to a second-straight OVC title under Paul Powers, earning his lone All-OVC honor for that performance.

Matt Gallant was the best player on the early-2000s team that won three straight OVC titles. Gallant was the 2003 OVC Player of the Year and earned three All-OVC nods during his career, one of seven golfers in program history with three or more All-OVC nods.

Anthony Bradley was the individual medalist at the 2012 OVC Men's Golf Championships, earning the right to represent Austin Peay at the Bowling Green Regional that year. Bradley played his best when it mattered most—he's the only player in program history with three All-OVC Tournament honors for his work in the conference championships.

Yoshio Yamamoto earned three second-team All-OVC honors during his career and was wildly over-qualified as the No. 2 in a lineup he shared with Leaver for three years. His 64 at the Xavier Invitational in 2005 set a program single-round record that would stand for nearly a decade.

Sly Mandle and Randy Jacobson played during the OVC and Tennessee Intercollegiate era, and succeeded in both. Mandle was twice All-OVC and All-State, while Jacobson earned one All-OVC nod to go with his two All-State appearances.

Michel "Barney" Alary was the capstone to the late-80s and early-90s success, earning a pair of All-OVC nods and 1991 OVC Player of the Year honors. He followed that with a distinguished teaching and coaching career, including a nod as 2016 PGA Middle Tennessee Teacher of the Year.
