GOVS-GAMECOCKS POSTGAMEÂ QUOTES
Austin Peay head coach Scotty Walden
Opening statement… "Obviously, we're disappointed with the way we played in the second half. We had the momentum going into halftime after that big field goal. (In the second half) I just felt like we couldn't get into a rhythm offensively, and then, they capitalized. We couldn't capitalize after getting an interception. We moved the ball and had 22 first downs, but we couldn't get that explosive play or finish drives (in the second half). Once they got into a rhythm, they started moving the ball offensively, and on special teams, they made some big-time plays. They made some game-changing plays. We just got beat in all three phases in the second half. We just did not play at our best against a really good team. When you make mistakes against a really good football team, you get exposed. We made some critical mistakes, and they capitalized on them. Give those guys credit. Jacksonville State is a really good football team, and they capitalized on our mistakes."
On the second half… "I don't think we executed well. I'm going to watch the film and watch it close. I don't think it was a lack of effort. We didn't capitalize and didn't execute when we had to. I thought that was the biggest difference. We were not efficient on our 1st and 10 plays. We didn't get efficient movement on 1st and 10 and in a lot of areas. I thought our guys were ginned up coming out of halftime. We came out with a mindset to play with great energy and great execution, but for whatever reason, we didn't execute."
On the rushing offense… "The sacks are probably skewing the numbers a little bit. I felt like we ran the ball pretty well. We rushed for 215 yards, but we were not efficient in the passing game. It just goes back to details, a couple of mishaps, whether it was route depth at the wrong yardage or we didn't stack a route or Mike missed a progression and forced a throw. However, I thought he played like a warrior running the ball. He averaged 5.6 yards per carry. He had some big-time runs, one for 58 yards. CJ Evans ran the ball very physically, really well. We got Drae in the backfield, and he ran the ball for about four yards per carry. I think we were efficient running the football, but the throwing game was off for whatever reason. In the second half, they got more pressure on Mike. They did a good job of getting pressure on him, making him off-platform and short-arm throws. I think that led to, if it wasn't an interception, it was a batted-down pass. Give those guys credit. They're long and athletic. We said it all week long, and they did a great job of pressuring our quarterback."
