CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Taly Cloyd had 23 kills and a .426 hitting percentage, but Austin Peay State University's volleyball team dropped a 3-2 match to Bellarmine, Saturday, at the Winfield Dunn Center.
Austin Peay (2-14, 0-4 ASUN) took control of the first set, going up 5-1 on Bellarmine (7-8, 1-2 ASUN). The Knights fought back to tie the set at 8, but a kill by Dani Kopacz gave the Governors their lead back as they led for the remainder of the set. Austin Peay went on a 7-0 run to lead by 19-12 and forced a Bellarmine timeout. The Knights would get as close as 22-16, but the first set win went to the Govs, 25-19.
The two teams went back and forth to start the second set, with three tied scores, the last being at 9. The Knights built their lead to 15-11 to force a Governors timeout. Austin Peay responded by getting back within one at 19-18 from a Knights error, but Bellarmine continued to lead and eventually took the 25-23 second set win.
Much like the second set, the Govs and the Knights battle back and forth, tying the set at 20. Consecutive kills by Cloyd gave the Governors a lead by two, which were met by kills from Bellarmine as the set was tied again at 23. Bellarmine ended the set with a kill and a Gov error to take the 25-23 third set win.
A kill by Dayan Malavé allowed the Govs to lead 17-13 in the third set and force a Knights timeout. The Knights fought back to get within three of the Governors at 23-20, but the Govs ended the set with a kill by Cloyd and a block by Malavé and Cloyd to take the 25-20 fourth set win.
Bellarmine took a quick 5-3 lead to begin the fifth set, forcing a Governor timeout. A kill by Cloyd, assisted by Brooklynn Merrell, would get the Govs as close as one at 6-5, but Bellarmine would ultimately take the 15-9 fifth set win for the 3-2 match.
