Govs Split Fall Doubleheader with Bruins

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – After dropping an 11-2 decision in Game 1, Austin Peay State University's softball team answered with a 2-1 victory against Belmont to split a Friday doubleheader against the Bruins at Cathi Maynard Park.

Alanah Jones went the distance in the Governors' pitchers' duel victory against the Bruins, with the former Purdue Fort Wayne ace striking out three batters, allowing just four hits, and giving up a single run.

Game 1

Austin Peay 2, Belmont 11

Top Second | Belmont's first batter of the second inning reached on a single, but was later called out after being gunned down on a ball from Brie Howard at center field to Jada Sovey at second base. A single then walk put runners on first and second, before a home run over the center field wall gave Belmont a 3-0 lead through two innings.

Top Third | The Bruins extended their lead on a two-RBI double in the top of the third.

Top Fifth | Belmont's second batter of the fifth inning reached on a single, stole second, and was brought across the plate following an RBI single.

Bottom Sixth | Austin Peay began the sixth with four-straight walks, with Emilee Baker, Maggie Daughrity, and Brie Howard loading the bases, before Sammie Shelander's free base brought in APSU's first run of the evening. Makenzie Woodall then popped up a sacrifice fly to bring in Daughrity and cut the Bruins' lead to 6-2.

Top Seventh | Three of Belmont's first four batters tallied hits, with the final of that run – an RBI single – being its first of five RBI in the frame. A two-RBI single was then followed by an RBI base knock for the game's final scoring.

Game 2

Austin Peay 2, Belmont 1

Bottom Second | Sammie Shelander led off the second inning for Austin Peay with a single, before being brought around the plate three batters latter off an RBI double by Ashlyn Dulaney.

Bottom Fifth | Facing two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Emilee Baker reached on a mishandled ball by Belmont's short stop. She then scored the game-extending run off a Brie Howard single, giving APSU a 2-0 lead after five.

Top Sixth | Belmont's second and third batters reached on a double and single, respectively, and a one-out sacrifice fly cut APSU's advantage to one, but proved to be the final score of the contest.
