OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Austin Peay State University's senior Kade Shatwell is one of 141 of the nation's best hurlers who were named to the National Pitcher of the Year Watch List by the College Baseball Foundation, the organization announced Wednesday.
The National Pitcher of the Year Award was first awarded in 2009 to Stephen Strasburg, who at the time played for San Diego State before joining the Washington Nationals for a 13-season career in Major League Baseball.
Shatwell has started four games this season, making an appearance in every weekend series, where he has pitched to a 2-1 record, a 1.82 ERA, and a .81 WHIP across 24.2 innings of work. He has also struck out a total of 23 batters and walked just five.
In his second start of the season against Eastern Michigan (Feb. 22), he threw 5.2 innings, not allowing a single hit and striking out six batters for his second win of the season. The following week at Cincinnati (Feb. 28), he threw the Governors' only complete game up to this point in the season, going eight innings and striking out a career-high seven batters, while picking up his only loss of the season.
Despite being a starting pitcher in the 2026 season, he was also named to the National Collegiate Sports Writers Association Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List prior to Austin Peay's opening weekend at UNLV.
