Career Recap: Austin Peay
As a senior in 2019:
- First Austin Peay player named the OVC Defensive Player of the Year.
- Played in all 31 matches (117 of 118 sets).
- Recorded career-best 572 digs in final season at Austin Peay, the fifth-best single season performance in program history.
- Became second Govs defender to record 2,000 career digs, reaching the milestone in her final match as a Governor with 14 digs against Morehead State in OVC Tournament’s opening round, Nov. 21.
- Set career-high with 43-dig performance against Southeast Missouri, Oct. 4, and then added 36 digs at Southeast Missouri, Nov. 7.
- Named OVC Defensive Player of the Week, Sept. 2, after earning NC State All-Tournament honors. She recorded 46 digs during the tournament and did not commit a reception error in 41 attempts.
As a junior in 2018:
- Saw action in 29 matches (108 sets), leading the Govs with 470 digs (4.35 per set) and 39 service aces (0.29 per set).
- Became the 20th Governors player to record 1,000 career digs against Northern Kentucky, Sept. 8, and finished the year ranked ninth in career digs (1,436).
- Set career high with 30 digs at Eastern Kentucky, Nov. 3, one of her 10 outings with 20 or more digs during the season.
- Named to Evansville all-tournament team after opening tournament with 21 digs against Northern Kentucky and nine in the Govs quick dispatching of host Evansville.
- Twice named OVC Defensive Player of the Week. First came after back-to-back 20-dig performances at Southeast Missouri, Sept. 21, and at UT Martin, Sept. 22. Second followed her career-best 30-dig outing at Eastern Kentucky which she paired with a 26-dig performance at Murray State.
- Set a career-high with five service aces in Govs win against Western Kentucky, Oct. 16. Earlier in the season she notched four aces against McNeese, Sept. 14.
As a sophomore in 2017:
- Made 16 “starts” as Govs libero and four starts as a defensive specialist and finished season with 468 digs this season, 22nd most in program history, and 29 service aces (0.23 per set).
- Began season as Govs libero before an injury forced her out of the lineup at Ole Miss, Sept. 7. Had three 20-dig performances in season-opening stretch, including season-best 28 digs at UAB, Sept. 1, during that opening stretch.
- Returned as libero at Southeast Missouri, Sept. 29, and appeared there in eight of the next nine matches before O’Reilly took over down the stretch.
- Saw plenty of action during OVC tournament as a defensive specialist, starting one match and coming off the bench in the semifinals and championship. Had 23 digs in championship match against Murray State, her best outing since her season-opening stretch.
As a freshman in 2016:
- Played in all 35 matches (126 of 127 sets) in her rookie season.
- Led Govs and ranked eighth among all OVC liberos with 3.95 digs per set, recording 498 digs. Also was ranked sixth among OVC players in service aces with a team-leading 36 aces (0.29 per set).
- Found groove in back row over season’s final 11 matches, averaging an impressive 5.51 digs per set (226 digs/41 sets) with seven 20-dig matches.
- Posted season-best 29 digs in Govs five-set win at Southeast Missouri, Oct. 29, followed by back-to-back 20-dig performances.
- Closed regular-season with a 27-dig effort in three sets against Eastern Illinois, while also earning credit for seven assists and two service aces. It was the 15th-best dig total in a three-set match among Division I liberos.
- Notched back-to-back 20-dig outings in OVC tourney play, opening with 25 digs in four sets against Tennessee State and following that with 20 digs in four sets against SIUE.
- Showed an early sign of things to come with 26-dig effort against Kent State, Sept. 10, a performance which also included five assists.
- At the service line, had an impressive three-game stretch in OVC play with nine aces on 47 service attempts, culminating with a season-best four aces at Murray State, Sept. 27.
Career Recap: Normal Community HS
Helped Ironmen reach back-to-back (2014-15) Illinois High School Association Class 4A Final Fours under head coach Christine Konopasek… Finished senior season with 445 digs (4.73 per set) and 44 service aces (0.47 per set)… Was named to honorable mention All-State list and earned second team all-district honors… As a junior, she posted 387 digs (4.40 per set) and 35 service aces (0.40 per set) and earned honorable mention all-district recognition and was a Pantagraph All-Area second-team selection… Played club volleyball with the Illini Elite Volleyball Club.
Personal
The daughter of Doug and Becky Gerig… born Dec. 21… has seven siblings: Nicki, Vanessa, Jackie, Jessie, David, Katie and Janelle… Ginny is the fourth collegiate volleyball player in her family… Nicki, who played at Auburn (2007) and Florida Atlantic (2008-10); Vanessa, who played at North Alabama (2010-11); Jackie, who played at LSU (2012) and Arkansas State (2013); and Jessie, who is currently a setter at Youngstown State.
