Career Recap: Austin Peay
As a junior in 2013 – Started 53 games behind the plate and finished season with 60 games played… Was behind the plate for 459.2 of 554.2 innings pitched during season, an 82.9 percent usage rate… Batted .273 with seven home runs in 35 RBI… In OVC action, batted .289 with five home runs and 19 RBI and was a second-team All-OVC selection… Caught an OVC-best 20 runners attempting to steal, also faced 80 stolen base attempts, third most in OVC… Did not record a passed ball in season’s first 29 games, a streak that ended against Tennessee Tech, April 5… Opened season with 3-for-3 outing that included a double and a triple against Iowa, Feb. 15… Had career-best four-hit outing against Morehead State, May 3, which included a walk-off solo home run in 10th inning… Reached base safely in then-team best 19 games, March 22-April 26, equaling mark set by Jordan Hankins…. Lone OVC tournament hit was game-clinching RBI single in fifth inning against Eastern Kentucky, May 23… Supplied a first-inning bases-loaded walk and two sacrifice bunts against Tennessee Tech, May 24… Had five hits in NCAA Bloomington Regional, including two-hit outings against Florida, May 31, and Valparaiso, June 2.
As a sophomore in 2012 – Torres appeared in 46 games, starting 38 contests… Compiled a .254 batting average with four home runs and 19 RBI… Began season with .346 batting average in season’s first nine games… Led Govs with five hits and five RBI in Southeast Missouri series, March 23-25, including two-run home run in Game 1 that provided eventual game-winning RBI… Next day, was 2-for-4 with two RBI in Game 2 with RBI single in sixth providing game-winning RBI… Twice tied Eastern Illinois opener, April 6, with a RBI single in the third and a two-run double in the ninth – and finished game 2-for-8 with three RBI… Belted two-run home run in Game 2 against Murray State, April 15, that was his only hit of the series… Missed seven games due to lower-body injury suffered in Lipscomb contest, May 8… Returned to starting lineup in regular-season finale at Tennessee Tech, May 19… Batted .333 with four hits and two RBI in OVC Tournament… Had ninth-inning pinch-hit RBI single in Govs’ OVC Tournament-opening loss to Southeast Missouri, May 24… Appeared in three games of the NCAA Eugene Regional… Pinch hit in eighth inning of Oregon tourney opener, June 1, and successfully sacrificed the go-ahead run to second base… Started behind plate against both Indiana State, June 2, and Cal State Fullerton, June 3 – backstopping the Govs’ two shutout performances in NCAA Tournament.
As a freshman in 2011 – Torres was the Govs starting catcher in 31 games… Was Govs No.1 catcher until third weekend of OVC play… Batted .175 with three home runs and 18 RBI… Hit first collegiate home run at Illinois State, March 18, his only hit of the series… Was 1-for-2 with two walks against Middle Tennessee, March 30… Snapped a streak of 14 at-bats without a hit in style, smashing a three-run home run against Belmont, April 13, and followed that with a two-run single as part of 2-for-5, five-RBI performance… Was 1-for-3 with a walk in Govs OVC Championship-clinching victory against Jacksonville State, May 28… Played in Georgia Tech contest, June 5, in lone appearance at NCAA Atlanta Regional.

Under head coach Tony Casa played catcher… Batted .500 with five home runs and 30 RBI as a senior… Caught every game as a junior and senior… Was a second-team All-Dade selection by the Miami Herald as a senior… Voted team captain in both junior and senior years.
