JJulian Terrell, a former Vanderbilt frontcourt standout, is the newest addition to Austin Peay’s basketball coaching staff.
Terrell came to APSU last summer from his alma mater where he served as the program’s director of video operations for two seasons. He elected to get into coaching in 2013 after playing seven seasons overseas in Germany, Portugal, the United Arab Emirates, Belgium, Finland and Kosovo. He played for the Portuguese Cup and League Champion in 2011. In 2006, Terrell played for the Washington Wizards Summer League team before heading overseas.
Terrell had an astoudning effect on the Governors post players in his first season, none more so than Chris Horton. Under Terrell's tutelage, Horton posted senior campaign averages of 18.8 points, 12.0 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and shot nearly 60 percent from the floor, propelling Austin Peay to the NCAA Tournament with a series of stand-out performances at the OVC Championships that earned him MVP of the tournament.
From 2003-06, Terrell started 81 games for the Commodores, averaging 7.0 points and 5.1 rebounds per game for his career, shooting better than 50 percent from the floor. He was a starter for a Commodore team that advanced to the 2004 NCAA Sweet 16. As a senior in 2005-06, the post player averaged 10.7 points, shooting 52 percent from the floor, and 7.2 rebounds per game, ranking seventh in Southeastern Conference. He produced four of his career nine double-doubles as a senior.
When he graduated in 2006 he left as one of two Vanderbilt players—joining Will Perdue—to grab 600 at least rebounds and block more than 100 shots.
The 6-8 former post player was a two-time team Commodore captain (2005-06) and was the 2006 Roy Skinner Award recipient that goes to a Vanderbilt player who “exhibited excellence in leadership, perseverance and performance during his career.”
Terrell was a two-time All-State selection at Ezell-Harding Academy, leading his team to back-to-back state championships his junior and senior season. He averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds per game as a senior and was a Tennessee Mr. Basketball Finalist.
Terrell graduated from Vandy in 2006 with a degree in Human and Organizational Development and Leadership. He is married the former Kristian Gonzalez and they have one son, Justice.
