Dean Walsh is the most recent addition to the Lady Govs coaching staff, joining the program during the summer of 2013 as an assistant coach.
Walsh will work with the Lady Govs post players, in addition to serving as scheduling coordinator, fundraising and community outreach liasion and co-recruiting coordinator.
“I feel fortunate and blessed to have someone of Dean’s caliber join our program,” said Daniels. “I believe he is exactly what we need. With his experience and everything he can add to what we have, I believe Dean is the final piece we need to get where we want to go.”
Walsh joined Daniels staff after a season at Gardner-Webb, where he was an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator.
“Getting back to the state of Tennessee was a huge draw,” said Walsh. “But it was Carrie and her staff that drew me here. They fit my goals and values of being a family atmosphere. They work hard and get along. I felt so comfortable here; coach Daniels and her staff made me feel right at home.
Walsh started his college coaching career with Hiwassee College in 1994, where he spent from 1994-98 seasons as the Tigers head coach. While at Hiwassee, Walsh had an overall record of 66-23 including a school-record 30 wins in 1997.
Walsh also was named region coach of the year twice, TJCAA Coach of the Year in 1996 and his team reached the National Junior College Athletic Association Sweet 16 in 1996-1997.
He returned to his alma mater at Maryville College in 1998, and over the next three years recorded an overall record of 61-17, with his team making two NCAA Division III tournament appearances. Walsh also earned the Great South Athletic Conference’s Coach of the Year honors in 2005.
Walsh left Maryville in 2001 for Carson Newman College, where he would spend 10 years as head coach, finishing his tenure third all time in school victories with 172. Carson Newman won a school-record 25 games in 2005. He also led Carson Newman to four NCAA tournament appearances and was named region coach of the year in 2005 and 2007.
In 2012, Walsh accepted his position with Gardner-Webb University where he assisted with scouting and game preparation, post-player development and post-season conditioning program. Walsh also coordinated recruiting activities, orchestrated official and unofficial visits and directed summer camp activities.
Walsh graduated from Maryville College in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science with an emphasis in pre-law.
He is and his wife Courtney have two children, Courtlyn-Olivia and Bayden-Henry.
