Carley Newman returns to the 2011 Lady Govs in her new
role as the team's graduate assistant after serving for three previous years as
the team's starting keeper.
She will serve in an administrative role for head coach
Kelley Guth, while also assisting with the goalkeepers.
Newman is coming off her finest season in net, allowing
only 15 goals in 194 shots attempts. The Lady Govs had .687 goals-against-average,
ranking 23rd nationally, while Newman's .850 save percentage ranked
24th nationally. At the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, where the Lady Govs
played in the championship game, Newman was one of three APSU players named the
all-tournament team.
The Memphis native actually began her career as a
defender, playing 11 games in the position as a freshman due to a hand injury
that prevented her from taking post in net. The following season, she won the
starting job two games into the season after posting a shutout against Lipscomb
and eventually was named the team's most valuable player.
Academically, Newman was named to the Athletics
Director's Honor Roll five times, the Dean's List twice and the OVC
Commissioner's Honor Roll once. She is currently performing her graduate work
in the Health and Human Performance Department while working on her master's
degree.
