Kim McGowan

Kim McGowan enters her fourth season as the Governors head soccer coach after being named the third head coach in program history, Dec. 13, 2021.

In her first three seasons, McGowan has posted a 15-26-17 record with eight student-athletes receiving ASUN Conference postseason honors, and made the ASUN Championship for the first time in program history in the 2023 season.

A Cincinnati, Ohio native, McGowan played four years of college soccer at Ohio Northern (2008-11), where she won the OAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament twice, while also playing a season of junior varsity basketball and a season of golf for the Polar Bears. 

McGowan holds her USSF Senior "A" License, a NSCAA Premier Diploma, NSCAA Goal Keeping Level 3, and is currently on staff with ODP Region III. In 2016, she was named to the United Soccer Coaches 30 Under 30 program, and recently was a 30 Under 30 mentor in 2023-24.

McGowan graduated from Ohio Northern with a bachelor of arts in sports management in 2012. She earned a master of science in sports administration from Georgia State University in December 2013.    

MCGOWAN’S COACHING SUMMARY

Austin Peay (2021-Present)

Prior to the 2025 season: McGowan agreed to a contract extension through the 2026 season.

2024: McGowan led Austin Peay to a 7-6-6 record during the 2024 season – its first winning campaign since the 2017 season – while APSU’s 5-3-3 mark in ASUN Conference play marked its first winning season in league action since the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference slate. The Governors also won four home matches for the second-straight season, which is tied for its most since 2018. Austin Peay earned five All-ASUN selections and three Academic All-ASUN recognitions – its most postseason honors in program history. Ellie Dreas and Lindsey McMahon earned Second Team All-ASUN honors, Aniyah Mack and Alec Baumgardt were tabbed Third Team All-ASUN, and Kiley Reese received All-Freshman recognition. Dreas, McMahon, and Hannah Zahn also earned Academic All-ASUN Team honors, which was the most in the ASUN in 2024. Dreas and McMahon became the fourth and fifth all-time selections to the United Soccer Coaches Women’s All-Region Teams, the first since 2012 (Tatiana Ariza), where they earned Third Team All-South Region honors.  

2023: Austin Peay secured its first berth in the ASUN Women’s Soccer Championship, and advanced in the postseason for the first time since 2013 after defeating Kennesaw State in penalty kicks during the first round of the tournament. Austin Peay won five matches during the 2023 season, including three in ASUN play. Its four home wins also were the most since the 2018 season. The Governors earned four ASUN postseason honors with Aniyah Mack receiving Second Team All-ASUN and All-Freshman Team Honors, Lindsey McMahon earning Third Team All-ASUN recognition, and Tori Case receiving ASUN All-Academic Team recognition. All four ASUN honors are the first in program history.

2022: Austin Peay won three matches during McGowan’s first season in Clarksville and in its first season as a member of the ASUN Conference. APSU played to a 0-0 draw against Miami (OH) – where she previously served as associate head coach – Aug. 31, 2022 in her first game as head coach. Her first win as head coach at Austin Peay came in a 2-0, shutout victory against UT Martin, Aug. 31, while her and the program’s first ASUN win came in a 3-1 victory at North Alabama, Sept. 25. 

Miami (OH) (2018-21)

2021: McGowan was promoted to associate head coach prior to her final season in Oxford, Ohio. The RedHawks went 8-8-3 with a 5-6 record in Mid-American Conference action, the program’s best regular-season and conference win totals since 2016. Four student-athletes earned All-MAC recognition. The 2021 season also saw the RedHawks find the back of the net 26 times and record six shutouts – the program's best single-season marks in both statistics since 2014 and 2016, respectively. Following the 2021 season, McGowan helped Kristina DeMarco and Hayes to Second Team All-MAC selections, while Kylee Beinecke and Makenna Morrison earned All-Freshman Team honors.

2020-21: Miami (OH) went 4-4 during the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season, which was played in the spring of 2021. McGowan coached Desiree Grubbs and Camber Hayes to Second Team All-MAC honors, with Hayes and Haley Anspach also picking up All-Freshman Team recognition.

2019: The RedHawks won four matches during their 2019 season, with a trio coming in MAC play.

2018: Miami (OH) won a trio of matches during McGowan’s first season in Oxford.

Thomas Moore (2017)

2017: McGowan led Thomas Moore to a 15-5-1 record, a Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship, and a PAC Tournament Championship. With three All-PAC selections and two United Soccer Coaches Association All-Region players, she also led Thomas More to the 2017 NCAA Division III Tournament.

Olivet (2015-16)

2016: The Comets went 8-10-1 and finished in sixth place in the MIAA during McGowan's second season as a head coach. Following the 2016 season, Leon earned Third Team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. In two seasons at Olivet, McGowan coached three First Team and three Second Team All-MIAA players.

2015: In her first season as a head coach, McGowan led Olivet to an 11-6-3 record and qualified for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament for the first time in five years. The Comets also set the program record for the fewest goals allowed (21) in McGowan's first season.

Hiram (2014)

2014: McGowan spent the 2014 season as an assistant coach at Division III Hiram College, where the Terriers had a program-record five All-North Coast Athletic Conference selections in her lone season.

Agnes Scott (2012-13)

2012-13: McGowan began her collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at Agnes Scott College, where she spent two seasons (2012-13), helping the Scotties win the 2012 Great South Conference Tournament Championship and advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The team was later inducted into the Hall of Fame in the fall of 2022.
