Clarksville, Tenn. – Junior right-handed pitcher Kelly Mardones, of the Austin Peay State University softball team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

The Denton, Texas native went 2-0 with a 0.58 ERA and 0.98 WHIP in 12 innings of work for the Govs last week, picking up wins against Rutgers and Mercer to earn adidas® Ohio Valley Conference co-Pitcher of the Week honors as the Govs posted a 5-1 record.

She led off her weekend at the Mercer Bears Classic by scattering five hits and an earned run to take down the host Bears, Friday, then followed that up with a four-hit shutout of Rutgers—the Governors first-ever victory over a Big 10 foe.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Wednesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Senior forward Averyl Ugba, of the men’s basketball team, was named MVP of the John McClendon Classic—Austin Peay’s opening-round CIT contest against ULM—after leading all scorers with 27 points in the Governors 80-66 victory.
  • Senior left-handed pitcher Michael Costanzo, of the baseball team, struck out a career-high nine batters over 5.1 innings to topple Murray State in the Battle of the Border series-opener, Friday, notching his fourth straight win in the process.
  • Sophomore Alex Vegh, of the men’s golf team, ripped off his third consecutive top-10 finish—the first such streak by a Governor since Marco Iten in 2014—thanks to a final-round 70, leaving him at five-under par (74-67-70—211) and tied for fifth at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate, moving up 19 spots on the leaderboard over the course of the final two days. He led the Govs in both par-3 (2.83/hole, tied with Austin Lancaster) and par-4 (3.97/hole) scoring and, with sophomore Michael Busse also picking up his third straight top-10 finish, Busse and Vegh are the first set of Governor teammates with three straight top-10 finishes since Iten and Anthony Bradley in 2012-13.
  • Junior Lidia Yanes Garcia, of the women’s tennis team, went 4-0 on the opening weekend of OVC play, winning both singles matches in straight-sets (6-2, 6-0 over Belmont’s Maria Plaksina, 6-1, 6-1 against Tennessee State’s Ani Popiashvili) to remain undefeated at No. 1 singles this season.
  • Junior Reagan Greene, of the women’s golf team, shot matching 74s in two rounds across three days to secure runner-up honors at the Citrus Challenge. She leaned heavily on her shortgame and iron work, which saw her average par on par-3 holes for the tournament’s duration.
