CLARKSVILLE— Junior forward Arielle Gonzalez-Varner, of the Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Gonzalez-Varner carved her name into the Austin Peay record book in Monday night’s contest against Mississippi Valley State by posting the first 30-point, 20-rebound game by any player in the long history of the school’s women’s basketball program. She scored 32 points (on 14-of-23 from the floor) and pulled down 23 rebounds, including an outstanding 16 offensive boards, to lead the Govs in both categories against the Devilettes.

A Cincinnati native, Gonzalez-Varner is now averaging 13.6 points and 12.6 rebounds through five games. She leads the nation in offensive rebounds per game (7.0), leads the Ohio Valley Conference in rebounding and is one of three players league-wide averaging a double-double.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Wednesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Sophomore quarterback Jeremiah Oatsvall, of the football team, threw for four touchdowns as the Govs toppled Murray State in the regular season finale. He was 15-of-23 passing for 193 yards and also scrambled 17 times for an additional 68 yards on the ground.
  • Sophomore guard/forward Terry Taylor, of the men’s basketball team, earned Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week and all-tournament honors at the Jamaica Classic after averaging 19.7 points, 13.0 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and 1.0 steals and hitting 51.2 percent (22-of-43) from the floor and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) at the line.
  • Senior setter Kristen Stucker, of the volleyball team, earned one last all-tournament honor at the OVC Volleyball Championships, racking up 101 assists as the Govs advanced to the championship match for the second year in a row. She had 49 assists and 13 digs while piloting the Govs to a .375 attack percentage in the semifinal contest against Jacksonville State.
