Austin Peay State University Athletics

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Junior defensive lineman Josephus Smith, of the Austin Peay State University football team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week, Wednesday.

Smith, of Leeds, Alabama, led the Governors with 3.5 tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks. His 3.5 tackles for a loss against Murray State gives him 18.5 TFLs on the season. Smith is only 0.5 TFL away from matching the Austin Peay single season record. Smith's 3.5 TFL aganist Murray State resulted in minus 39 yards of offense for the Racers. 

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Athletic Communications staff each Wednesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

• Senior Ariella Gonzalez-Varner, of the Women’s basketball team, posted double-doubles in both games last week, with 15 points and 12 rebounds against Illinois and 21 points and 13 rebounds against Mississippi Valley State. The senior forward averaged 18 points and 12.5 rebounds over the past week. 
• Freshman Jordyn Adams, of the Men’s basketball team, showed no nerves in his first start as a Govs scoring 12 of his 15 points in the first half at Tulsa. His jumper in the lane with under six minutes to play in the first half gave Austin Peay its first lead in the contest, while his second-half three-pointer keyed a second-half run which allowed the Govs to retake the lead.
• Junior DeAngelo Wilson, of the football team, led the Governors with six catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Wilson’s first touchdown was a 40-yard strike down the seam and on the second he got wide open in the corner of the end zone on an 8 yard play-action pass for the touchdown. Wilson also broke the Austin Peay single-season receiving yards record, he has 1,184 yards this season.
