Senior pitcher and first baseman Kelsey Gross, of the Austin Peay State University softball team, has been named this week’s Austin Peay Athlete of the Week.

Gross pulled off a rare feat last week, earning Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher and Batter of the Week after leading the Govs to a sweep of Murray State and wins in two of three against Jacksonville State over the weekend.

The Collierville, Tennessee native batted .462, with two home runs, in four wins last week, including picking up two game-winning hits among her 10 total RBIs, as the Govs clean-up hitter moved into a tie for the top spot in the OVC in RBIs this season. In the circle, Gross appeared in three of the four games played by the Govs this week, not allowing a run in her eight total innings of work and holding opponents to a .148 batting average.

Gross closed the series against the Racers with a 2-for-4, 4-RBI performance and opened the series against the Gamecocks with two hits and five RBI. She drove in what ultimately proved to be the game-winning run in both contests as well.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Freshman Frederic Schlossmann, of the men’s tennis team, earned his first career OVC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week honor after helping clinch the doubles point and rallying back for a hard-fought 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles to lead the Govs to a much-needed win against Eastern Illinois.
  • Redshirt sophomore infielder Gino Avros, of the baseball team, put together four straight multi-hit games for the Govs last week, including a 7-for-12 performance over the weekend against Morehead State and a leadoff homer in Tuesday’s midweek against sixth-ranked Ole Miss.
  • Junior Danielle Morris, of the women’s tennis team, earned her first career OVC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week award thanks to a perfect 3-0 week in singles play, with two of those wins serving as the match-clinching point for Austin Peay. She also scored a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles against SIUE.
  • Senior Chase Korte, of the men’s golf team, fired a final-round 69 to lead the Govs to a fifth-place finish at the Big Blue Intercollegiate, equaling four other players for the lowest final-round score and sharing eighth (71-73-69—213) with teammate Austin Lancaster.
