Clarksville, Tenn. – Junior Iago Seffrin, of the Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team, has been named this week’s Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.
Seffrin earned Ohio Valley Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after winning both his No. 4 singles matches last week to run his current winning streak to seven matches. He defeated Morehead State’s Nick Mercer (6-0, 6-1) on Saturday and his 6-4, 6-4 win against Eastern Kentucky’s Sebastian Mueller clinched the victory for Austin Peay.
The Brazilian has teamed with fellow junior Dimitar Ristovski to go 12-2 at doubles this spring; the pair has won three in a row and eight of their last 10 after dispatching Morehead State (8-5) and Eastern Kentucky (8-4) this weekend.
Seffrin’s weekly honor from the conference is the first of his Austin Peay career and second by a Gov in 2014 after Jasmin Ademovic shared the March 18 honor.
The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Tuesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.
Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:
- Senior Marco Iten, of the men’s golf team, was runner-up at the Memphis Intercollegiate with a one-over 217 (74-71-72), leading the Govs to a sixth-place finish and earning OVC Male Golfer of the Week honors. For Iten, it was his second consecutive top-two finish.
- Senior Rachel Deaton, of the women’s golf team, led the Lady Govs to a second-place finish at the WKU Lady Topper Classic, shooting a three-round 234 (77-79-78) to finish sixth overall.
- Freshman pitcher/infielder Alex Robles, of the baseball team, kept the most fearsome offense in the OVC off-balance Friday night. He went a career-high eight innings in the series-opener against Tennessee Tech, scattering nine hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out a career-high six batters for the win. He helped his cause at the plate by going 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
- Freshman Amia Butler, of the track and field team, won the 100m hurdles with a personal-best 14.22 run at the Margaret Simmons Invitational. She also was runner-up in the long jump (5.47m) in the first of two Murray State meets on the Austin Peay schedule.
