Clarksville, Tenn. – Junior Breigh Jones, of the Austin Peay State University women’s track and field team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Jones staked her claim as the best sprinter in the Ohio Valley Conference, posting wins in the 60m (7.64) and 200m (25.05) dashes at last weekend’s SIU Invitational. The Memphis native also posted a strong leg in the Lady Govs’ eventual runner-up posting in the 4x400m relay (3:54.09).

With the 7.64 besting the previous school-record in the 60m dash, Jones now owns, as either an individual or as part of a relay team, three school indoor records and two outdoor records.

Entering the upcoming weekend, the three-time 2015 adidas®/OVC Female Track Athlete of the Week (this week’s selection will not occur until Wednesday) is one of only nine athletes in the country to rank in their respective conference top-fives in the 60m, 200m and 400m dashes. Of those, only four, including Jones, compete in a conference featuring at least 10 women’s track and field teams. Only three – Jones (200m and 400m), Quinnipiac’s Shameal Samuels (200m and 400m) and LIU Brooklyn’s Stephanie Adioo (60m and 200m) are also conference leaders in two of the three events.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Tuesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Junior Chris Horton, of the men’s basketball team, averaged a double-double (15.0 ppg, 12.0 rpg) to go along with 3.5 bpg for the Govs last week, including a 16-point, 15-rebound game against Murray State. His 15 boards were the most by a Gov against the Racers since Fernandez Lockett had 13 against the Racers, Jan. 12, 2006.
  • Sophomore jumper Kaylnn Pitts, of the track and field team, won the triple jump for the second week in a row, this time at the SIU Invitational with a season-best 12.40m leap that ranks first in the OVC and 54th in the nation.
  • Sophomore Aaron Jumonville, of the men’s tennis team, emerged unscathed from the weekend’s singles matches against Lipscomb’s Alex Pavel (6-2, 6-2) and Southern Illinois’ Szymon Opieczonek (7-5, 6-0).
  • Sophomore infielder Christiana Gable, of the softball team, hit .462 (6-for-13) with a pair of home runs and 10 RBI, including the game-winning hit against Mississippi Valley State, at last weekend’s Mississippi State Bulldog Classic.
