CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – For the second consecutive week junior Breigh Jones, of the Austin Peay State University women’s track and field team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

In her return to her primary event, the 400m dash, Jones showed no rust, destroying the school record with a first-place, 54.01-second run, Saturday, at the SPIRE Invitational in Geneva, Ohio. That time shaved nearly three-quarters of a second off the mark she set less than a month ago at the ETSU Invitational.

Jones’ mark not only leads the conference by nearly a 1 ½ seconds, it ranks 41st nationally and sixth among athletes outside the traditional power conferences.

Entering the upcoming weekend, the four-time 2015 adidas®/OVC Female Track Athlete of the Week (this week’s selection will not occur until Wednesday) is approaching marks not set in the 400m indoor event in 25 years, when Murray State’s Stephanie Saleem, the conference record-holder (52.67, according to research) was still competing.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Tuesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Junior pitcher Jared Carkuff, of the baseball team, scattered five hits, allowed one unearned run while striking out four in gaining the victory against South Dakota State in his season debut.
  • Junior guard Tiasha Gray, of the women’s basketball team, averaged 28.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 4.0 steals last week on 57.6 percent (19-for-33) shooting from the floor. She scored 31 points and added six steals in Thursday’s win against Eastern Illinois, bumping her steals average up to 3.62 per game, second nationally.
  • Sophomore catcher Ridge Smith, of the baseball team, hit .714 (5-for-7) with a double, a triple, a run scored and three RBI in two Governors victories last weekend. His run-scoring triple in the sixth inning against Niagara brought the Govs back from six runs down to tie the game at seven; they eventually won 15-7.
