Clarksville, Tenn. – Senior Aleksas Tverijonas, of the Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Tverijonas was unbeaten (3-0 in singles, 2-0 in doubles) last week, leading the Govs to a 3-0 record in their first week of Ohio Valley Conference play – one of two teams still unbeaten in conference play.

The Lithuanian-bred Tverijonas was untroubled in any singles match last week, winning all three in straight sets. He stepped forward into the No. 1 role at Murray State, coming away with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Will True, before later dispatching Eastern Illinois’ Ryan Henderson (6-2, 6-3) and SIU Edwardsville’s Nicholas Vincent (6-4, 6-0).

In doubles action, Tverijonas and No. 2 partner Aaron Jumonville were dominant with wins against Murray State (True-Srdjan Trosic, 8-1) and SIU Edwardsville (Marten Jonsson-Nico Kuehn, 8-2). The duo were leading EIU’s Grant Reiman and David Constantinescu, 7-4, when the Govs clinched the point, with that match going unfinished.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Tuesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Sophomore jumper Chancis Jones, of the track and field team, won the long jump (5.76m) and was second in the triple jump (11.91m) at the Georgia Relays, ranking her 18th and 22nd in the NCAA East region in those events after the first weekend of competition.
  • Sophomore first baseman Christiana Gable, of the softball team, hit .480 (12-for-25) with two home runs, three doubles, six runs and nine RBI, recording hits in all seven OVC contests for the Lady Govs last week. Her go-ahead three-run blast in the top of the seventh at Tennessee State capped the comeback in Austin Peay’s 14-13 win against the Tigers, Saturday.
  • Junior pitcher Jared Carkuff, of the baseball team, tossed seven scoreless innings, scattering three hits and striking out seven to lead the Govs to victory at Murray State, Saturday.
