CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.--Jenny Kelley, Austin Peay State University senior shortstop, has been named to the 2003
Verizon Academic First-Team All-District IV softball team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of
America.
Also, Govs catcher A.J. Ellis has been second-team Academic All-District IV baseball.
As a result of earning first-team District IV (all Division I schools in Tennessee, Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky and Ala-
bama) honors, Kelley's name will appear on the Verizon Academic All-America national ballot.
The Jasper, Ala., native owns a 3.453 grade-point average in dual biology/chemistry major. She is a three-time
member of the Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll (3.25 GPA for year), a six-time member of the Dean's
List (3.5 GPA for semester) and seven-time member of the Athletics Director's Honor Roll (3.0 GPA for semester).
Kelley is a three-year captain and member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC). She also is a member of
Omicron Delta Kappa, Alpha Lamba Delta and Tri-Beta Honor Societies.
On the field, Kelley has twice been voted first-team All-OVC shortstop and holds the single-season and career-
records for doubles. She entered this week's OVC tourney batting a team-best .331 with a team-high 50 hits and 11 stolen
bases.
Ellis, meanwhile, has a 3.31 GPA as a public relations major with an English writing minor. He is a three-time member
of the Dean's List (3.5 GPA) and six-time member of the Athletics Director's Honor Roll. He also has been a member of the
OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll. A former officer for SAAC, the Lexington, Ky., native is 2003 team captain. He recently
was selected the dpeartment's Male Joy Award recipient as the most valuable senior athlete.
On the diamond, Ellis is a three-time All-OVC selection--the first player in league history to be elected at three
different positions (utility, first base and catcher, respectively). Recently, he became APSU's career hits leader. This year he
is batting .325 with five home runs and 28 RBI. Defensively, he has elevated his reputation as one of the area's top throw-
ing catchers, catching almost 50 percent of would-be base stealers.
To be nominated for Academic All-America, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.2
grade-point average (4.0 scale). He/she almost must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing. True
freshmen, redshirt freshmen, first-year transfers and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible.
