Lady Govs fall to Murray State, 2-1

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 Ohio Valley Conference match against Murray State, Friday, at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field. The Lady Govs fall to 6-8 overall and winless at 0-4 in OVC play, while the Racers improve to 8-6 with a 3-2 league mark.

It was a physical match as the teams recorded 21 fouls between them. Murray State outshot Austin Peay 17-11, including a 11-8 second-half advantage. The Lady Govs managed only two shots on goal, while the Racers had five ? four coming in the second half.

Jaclyn Ramage scored the Racer's first goal in the 26th minute. An Austin Peay set up a free kick outside the box by Kara Carlile and Ramage deposited it to put Murray State ahead, 1-0. Murray State held that lead through the half, but both teams came out of the break with high intensity.

The Lady Govs would tie the game on a penalty kick by junior Ashley Michels. The aggressiveness inside the box by the Racers became too much and Michels took advantage for her season's first goal. It was her only shot in the contest.

The gamewinner came in the 78th minute when the Racers applied the pressure in front of Austin Peay keeper Michelle Smith. While the Lady Govs defense held strong, a shot by Kellyn Robison was blocked and Jen Nowak punched it past for a 2-1 lead.

Junior Ashley Beck had four shots, with none on goal, while freshman Kellie Cannon added two shots. Smith finished with five saves, while allowing two goals.

Nowak had three shots, two on goal, to lead the Racer's offense. Goalkeeper Tara Isbell allowed one goal and made two saves.

The Lady Govs return to action with a 2 p.m., Sunday, match against Tennessee-Martin at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field. Admission is free to all Austin Peay soccer games.
