CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University women's soccer team lost, 1-0, to Tennessee Tech, Friday in Ohio Valley Conference action at Morgan Bros. Soccer Field. The Lady Govs fall to 3-9-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the OVC, while the Golden Eagles improve to 3-10-1 and 2-1-1 in the league
The Lady Govs played with great intensity in the first half, outshooting the Golden Eagles 11-2 in the frame. In fact, the offense worked around its goal early on, putting two shots on goal in the game's first 16 minutes. TTU's Kaitlyn Thacker came up with saves on both attempts and continued to hold strong throughout the game.
It was late in the second half when the Golden Eagles got on the board. The offense packed the box and had just begun to spread down the field. Ashley Smith came up with the ball in the right corner, dribbled into the box and fired a shot past the Lady Govs keeper into the left corner of the net. That goal proved to be the game-winner.
Austin Peay had a late opportunity when Thacker was pulled out of the goal, but sophomore Kellie Cannon's shot hit the right post.
“We told them at halftime you can't get comfortable,” said Lady Govs head coach Kelley Guth. “We allowed a team that wanted it more than us to dominate the second half. They deserved to win. They outplayed us in the second half. We're going to take a look at the personnel that was on the field and we're probably going to make some changes for Sunday. We have to show up.”
Sophomore Samantha Northrup led Austin Peay with three shots, two on goal, while senior Ashley Beck and freshmen Alanna Foster and Jocelyn Murdoch each had three shots. Sophomore keeper Carley Newman had three saves for Austin Peay.
Thacker finished with five saves, earning her season's shutout. Smith's goal was her season's fourth.
The Lady Govs return to action with a 2 p.m., Sunday match with Virginia Military Institute at Morgan Bros. Soccer Field. All Austin Peay soccer games are free and open to the public.
