CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University women's soccer team continues Ohio Valley Conference action with a two-game road trip, playing a 6 p.m., Friday match at Morehead State followed by a noon, Sunday match at Eastern Kentucky.
The Lady Govs (3-7, 1-0 OVC) opened OVC play with a 1-0 win against Jacksonville State, last Friday. Due to the return to travel partners for league play, Austin Peay had the following Sunday off. Freshman
Rian Barger ? who is one of seven players tied for the league lead with four goals ? scored the game-winner against JSU in the 66th minute. The goal came off a rebound, collected by Barger, from a shot by sophomore
Kellie Cannon.
Although Cannon, who moved to the midfield, and Barger have provided the quick spark for the Lady Govs offense, freshmen
Jocelyn Murdoch and
Alanna Foster control the steady push up front. Foster has two goals and two assists, thus far, while Murdoch scored her only goal in the Lady Govs win at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Sophomore keeper
Carley Newman continued her solid play in net, making six saves and earning her season's third shutout. In fact, each of the Lady Govs wins have been in shutout fashion, dating back to a 1-0 win over Lipscomb, Aug. 31. Junior
Lauren Moon has continued to anchor Austin Peay's defense, along with sophomore
Hannah Jones.
Morehead State (4-6, 1-0 OVC) went 1-1 last week, falling at Illinois State, 2-1, and winning a 3-2 overtime OVC match at Eastern Kentucky. The Eagles played a challenging schedule early in the season, opening at Miami, at Western Kentucky and at East Tennessee. Since the 0-3 start, they have won four of their last seven. Erin Adams and Jillian Birchmeier have four goals each to lead MSU's offense.
Eastern Kentucky (2-6-2, 0-1 OVC) finished last week winless, losing to Morehead State in overtime and playing to a 1-1 tie with Francis Marion. Coming off a pair of extended matches and hosting Tennessee Tech in a 6 p.m., Friday match, the Lady Colonels should be on their second wind come Sunday's match. Kayla Swearingen leads an offense that sits behind the Lady Govs in every offensive category in the conference ranks. Keeper Stephanie Lynch, however, ranks second with an .842 save percentage with 64 stops made this season.
