Austin Peay State University women's soccer team wraps up its season with a 6:30 p.m., Friday match at Belmont. The Lady Govs will face a Bruins team seeded third in the Atlantic Sun for the second straight year.
Austin Peay came up short of postseaon play, finishing with a 4-11-3 overall record and a 1-4-3 Ohio Valley Conference mark. On the season's final weekend, the Lady Govs lost 1-0 at regular-season champion Murray State and tied UT Martin, 1-1. Sophomore Monique Wong scored the weekend's only goal.
The Lady Govs offense struggled badly throughout the conference season, scoring only three goals in league play. Sophomore keeper Carley Newman, who became the everyday keeper early in the season, played in nine games, making 54 saves. Newman settled in well in her first full season in net and will look to close out strong, Friday.
It will be the last match for seniors Ashley Beck and Ashley Michels. Beck finished 2008 with three goals and regardless of Friday's action, will leave as the Lady Govs all-time leading goal-scorer. Michels, one of Austin Peay's first-ever junior college transfers, played two seasons as a forward for head coach Kelley Guth.
Belmont (11-6-1) is led by Annie Musacchio's seven goals and 42 shots. The Bruins keeper Sari Lin also boasts a 0.91 goals-against-average, making 95 saves while allowing 16 goals. They have won two straight heading into their postseason tournament which starts next week. After a 4-0 romp of North Florida, the Bruins ran away with a 3-2 overtime-win over Jacksonville.
