Beck's goal not enough, Lady Govs soccer falls at Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? Senior Ashley Beck's final goal was not enough as Austin Peay State University women's soccer team dropped its season-finale, 2-1, at Belmont, Friday night. The Lady Govs finish the season 4-12-3, while the Bruins return to action in the Atlantic Sun tournament with a 12-6-1 overall record.

Austin Peay fell behind early as Belmont found the back of the net in the sixth minute. Marcela Sanchez worked a ball from the deep left side to Alex Morgado, who set up Elizabeth Bublis in the box for a goal. The Bruins would go on to out-shoot the Lady Govs, 10-4, in the first half, but APSU sophomore keeper Carley Newman held strong, making five saves in the frame.

Early in the second half, the Lady Govs defense found itself too physical inside the box. An Austin Peay foul set up a Belmont penalty kick and Jessica Rix converted the one-on-one opportunity to take a 2-0 lead in the 48th minute.

Austin Peay amped up its offensive attack at that point and would pound Belmont for seven shots in the final period. Beck's goal came in the 81st minute on a shot that sailed over the head of the Bruin keeper in the upper quadrant of the net. The Lady Govs could not develop another goal-scoring opportunity in the game's final nine mintues.

Beck played the game like it was her last, leading the Lady Govs with five shots, two on goal. Sophomore Samantha Northrup had two shots, both on goal. Newman finished with eight saves.

Bublis' goal came on her only shot, as did Rix's. Jamie Bullock had four shots and Annie Musacchio had three. Renee Pilch got the win in net, making five stops.
