Opportunistic Govs down Bisons

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Austin Peay State University's baseball team took advantage of several free baserunners on its way to an 8-6 victory against Lipscomb, Tuesday night, at Raymond C. Hand Park.

Austin Peay (6-5) scored all eight of its runs in the first five innings as Lipscomb's pitchers permitted seven hits and seven walks in the opening five frames. Third baseman Tyler Farrar made the most of the early opportunities with three RBI ? two on a second-inning single and the third on a groundout in the third. The Govs scored four runs in that second inning and added another two runs in the fourth ? the first scoring on a balk and the second on Farrar's groundout.

Lipscomb (4-7) outhit Austin Peay, 12-9, but could not make up for the free baserunners permitted by the pitchers. The Bisons scored solo runs in the second, fourth, sixth and ninth frames and added a two-run third inning.

APSU's Ryne Mantooth (2-0) picked up the victory after allowing five runs (four earned) on 11 hits over 6.1 innings. Reliever Matt Kole, who started at first base, picked up his season's second save after allowing one run over the final 2.2 innings. Kole also was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two walks and a RBI. Farrar was 2-for-5 with three RBI and shortstop Greg Bachman chipped in two hits.

Lipscomb starter Mike Zenko (0-1) was tagged for the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits and three walks over two innings. Reliever Jordan Baron got off to a rough start but allowed only three baserunners over the final three innings and finished with three runs allowed (two earned) on four hits and five walks while striking out eight over the final six innings. Blake Bratcher was one of five Bisons players with two hits, posting a 2-for-5, 2 RBI effort.

Austin Peay returns to action with a 3 p.m., Wednesday, contest against Belmont at Nashville's Greer Stadium.
