LITTLE ROCK, Ark. ? Austin Peay State University missed its first six shots and could never recover as it fell to No. 2 seed Texas, 74-54, Friday afternoon, in NCAA South Region basketball action at Alltel Arena.
As a result, the Governors' season ends at 24-11?the 24 wins matching a school record. Texas, meanwhile, improves to 29-6 and will face Miami (Fla.) in the Round of 32.
The Governors, who had not played a game in 13 days, showed that rust early on as they fell behind 9-0 before Todd Babington ended the drought by nailing a three pointer with 15:53 left in the half.
But Texas then would score the next 10 points, leading 19-3, and the Governors would never recover. The Governors would never cut the deficit below 14 the remainder of the half and would trail by as much as 20 before settling for a 39-24 halftime advantage.
APSU converted just 7-of-28 (25 percent) from the floor in the opening half. They were a little better in the second half, shooting 10 of 31 (32.3 percent) for a season-low 28.8 percent but could never challenge the Longhorns, who got 26 points from guard A.J. Abrams, including six three pointers while forward Damian James (10 points, 10 rebounds) and reserve center Dexter Pittman (11 points, 10 rebounds) recorded double-doubles. The Longhorns also got eight and seven assists, respectively, from guards D.J. Augustin and Justin Mason.
The Governors, meanwhile, got 14 points and nine rebounds from sophomore forward Ernest Fields off the bench while Babington added 11 points. The senior needed three three pointers to set the Governors' single season record for makes?and he got three, giving him 102 this season.
The contest closed out the respective careers of Govs seniors Babington,
Derek Wright, who started despite suffering a severe thigh injury against Tennessee State in the Ohio Valley Conference title game;
Fernandez Lockett;
Brandon Harriford and
Tomas Janusauskas.
