CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? Sophomore-transfer Krista New picked up her biggest hit of the season Saturday afternoon, as her bases-loaded double drove in three runs, giving the Austin Peay softball team a come-from-behind 5-4 Ohio Valley Conference win against Southeast Missouri at Lady Govs Field.
The win broke an eight-game losing streak for Austin Peay (5-18, 2-6 OVC), including six straight in conference play.
New's double was the second of the inning for Austin Peay, as sophomore Daniella Hooper doubled with one out followed by a single by freshman Ashley Alverson moving pinch runner Detra Farley to third.
Farley was cut down at the plate for the second out of the inning on a fielder's choice off the bat of junior Krista Henke. A walk to sophomore Brittany Williams loaded the bases, setting up New's heroics.
Southeast Missouri (13-17, 3-6 OVC) jumped on Lady Govs starter Ashley Elrod (4-7) early scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, as the Redhawks got singles from Michelle Summers, Stacia Dopudja and Lauren Bradley along with two errors committed by the Lady Govs.
Elrod would settle down after that, as the right hander held SEMO to those three runs until the top of the seventh, when the Redhawks pushed across a run on hits by Summers, Megan McDonald and Dopudja followed by a walk to Bradley with the bases loaded.
Austin Peay had cut the margin to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double by sophomore Ashley Taylor, driving in freshman Randal Davenport and sophomore Beth Carr, who had reached on a walk and an error respectively.
Overall, the Redhawks outhit the Lady Govs 11-9, with Summers and McDonald collecting three hits each. Austin Peay got two hits each from Alverson and fellow freshman Tiffany Smith.
The second game of the Saturday doubleheader was postponed because of rain and will be made up as a doubleheader today, starting at 11 a.m. at Lady Govs Field.
