STARKVILLE, Miss. ? In a game of big innings, Austin Peay State University's one big frame couldn't match Mississippi State's three big innings in a 13-4 loss, Tuesday night at Dudy Noble Field.
Mississippi State (11-15) jumped on Austin Peay starter Jake Brisbin in the first inning, sending 10 men to the plate with seven of its first eight batters scoring. After the first two batters were hit by a pitch, designated hitter Jason Nappi doubled to score the game's first run and third baseman Connor Powers followed with a two-run single. One batter later, second baseman Jet Butler plated another two runs with his double. Catcher Ryan Duffy closed out the scoring with a two-run home run to right center, giving MSU a 7-0 lead.
Austin Peay (12-11) battled back with a four-run third inning ? scoring all its runs with two outs. Shortstop Greg Bachman started the rally with an RBI single, right fielder Will Hogue followed with a two-run double and left fielder Ryan Gilboy closed the spurt with an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 7-4.
However, the Govs would get no closer as the Bulldogs added three runs in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth to seal the victory. Two RBI singles and a sacrifice accounted for the fifth's scoring. In the sixth, the Bulldogs scored courtesy a balk and added two runs on first baseman Tyler Moore's double.
Brisbin (1-1) was tagged for the loss after allowing 10 runs on eight hits over four-plus innings. Reliever Jeff Brooks surrendered three runs over the final four innings on six hits.
Offensively, Hogue led Austin Peay with a 3-for-4, 2 RBI effort. Hill went 2-for-4 for the Govs only other multi-hit effort as the Govs posted 10 hits.
Mississippi State's Andy Wilson (2-0) picked up the win in relief, holding the Govs scoreless while scattering two hits over four innings. Starter Greg Houston left with no decision after allowing four unearned runs on six hits over three innings.
Shortstop Russ Sneed led the Mississippi State offense with a 3-for-4 effort. Three other Bulldogs had had two hits each as MSU posted 14 hits on the night.
Austin Peay and Mississippi State conclude their two-game series with a 6:30 p.m. contest, today.
