NASHVILLE ? Maybe the best way to sum up the day for the Austin Peay softball team Sunday against Tennessee State, in the finale of its Ohio Valley Conference series with the Lady Tigers was this ? played well, had chances, came up short in a 1-0 loss.
That has been a common occurrence this season as the Lady Govs fall to 7-26 overall and 3-13 in conference play.
The Lady Govs left seven runners on base ? compared to just three for Tennessee State (15-26, 7-1 OVC) ? with four of those being in scoring position and Austin Peay going 0-for-7 at the plate in those situations.
It wasn't that Tennessee State was that much better.
The Lady Tigers only had five hits against Lady Govs starter redshirt sophomore Ashley Elrod (6-10), but got a one-out triple to right-center field from leadoff hitter Jennifer Gregory, in the bottom of the sixth inning, followed by a single up the middle by Tamara Perkins driving in what turned out to be the game winner.
The only other real scoring chance for Tennessee State came in the bottom of the first, as Gregory doubled to open the inning, but was left at third base with Elrod inducing three infield outs.
The Lady Govs best chances to score came in the fifth and seventh innings.
In the fifth, Austin Peay loaded the bases on a one-out single by junior Krista Henke, sophomore Brittany Williams reaching on an error and pinch hitter sophomore Krista New drew a walk; but sophomores Beth Carr popped up and Ashley Taylor grounded out to end the threat.
In the seventh, sophomore Daniella Hooper doubled to right-center field to open the inning and giving the Lady Govs a chance to at least tie the game, but couldn't get the runner around, as Henke flew out to short right, Brittany Williams walked, pinch hitter freshman Detra Farley struck out and Carr groundout to end the game.
Sophomore Megan Williams had the other Lady Govs hit Sunday, a single to center in the fourth inning.
