Lady Govs swept by Gamecocks

CLARKSVILLE ? Scoring woes that have plagued the Austin Peay softball team all season continued on Saturday, as the Lady Govs dropped a pair of Ohio Valley Conference games to Jacksonville State, 3-0, and, 7-1, at Lady Govs Field.

Austin Peay (9-34, 3-19 OVC) was limited to just nine hits in the doubleheader against the conference leading Gamecocks, while Jacksonville State (31-14, 18-4 OVC) collected 19.

The Gamecocks got out to a quick 1-0 lead in Game 1, as Chrissy O'Neal open the game with a single and scored an out later on a single by Nikki Prier.

The score would remain that way until the sixth, when Jacksonville State scored two more times on RBI singles by O'Neal and Prier to go up 3-0.

But it was the fourth and fifth innings where the Lady Govs had their chances to tie or take the lead. But Austin Peay left five runners on base in those two innings ? including the bases loaded in the fifth.

Ashley Elrod took the loss for Austin Peay, allowing nine hits and three earned runs, while walking two and striking out two. Meanwhile, JSU's Melissa Dowling got the victory ? going the first 4 2/3 innings ? with Ashley Eliasson recorded her season's fifth save, going the final 2 1/3 innings.

Meagan Williams, Daniella Hooper and Randal Davenport had the Lady Govs three hits in the opener ? all singles.

Austin Peay got in a big hole early in Game 2 as the Gamecocks scored all seven of its runs in the first two innings on eight hits, including three doubles.

Austin Peay missed a chance in the third inning to cut into the Gamecocks lead as freshmen Detra Farley and Randal Davenport got back-to-back hits with one out, but the Lady Govs couldn't get them around.

The Lady Govs finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth as Beth Carr's infield single scored Krista Henke, who had reached on a single, and was followed by Farley being hit by a pitch and Davenport reaching on an infield single to load the bases.

Eliasson would work her way out of the inning without any more damage to pick up the win, while Williams, who started for the Lady Govs, took the loss.

Davenport led the way for the Lady Govs at the plate in Game two, going 3-for-3, despite feeling under the weather.

The two teams will conclude their OVC series today at 1 p.m. with a single game at Lady Govs Field.

Note: The day was also 'Alumni Day' for Austin Peay with nearly 30 former Lady Govs softball players in attendance.
