Lady Govs swept by Morehead State

CLARKSVILLE ? The only thing cooler than the winds that blew threw Lady Govs Field Saturday was the Austin Peay softball team's offense, as the Lady Govs dropped two Ohio Valley Conference games to Morehead State 6-1 and 10-0.

Austin Peay (6-23, 2-10 OVC) only managed eight hits during the doubleheader, with a RBI single by sophomore catcher Daniella Hooper driving in sophomore shortstop Ashley Taylor in the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 1, accounting for its only run of the day.

Morehead State (22-7, 7-4 OVC) continued its turnaround season, as the Eagles ? who were picked to finish dead last in the OVC preseason polls ? have now won more games in a single season since 1999 when they won 27 game.

It didn't take Morehead long to get things going in Game 1, as the Eagles opened the inning with back-to-back singles by Bri Jones and Kari Quinn. After a sacrifice bunt moved them into scoring position, both scored on a single by Rebecca Butler.

The Eagles would tack on a run in the second on an RBI single by Courtney Seiler, while blowing the game open with three more runs in the fourth to go up 6-0. Ashley Archer's double driving in two highlighted the fourth inning for Morehead State.

Overall Morehead State outhit the Lady Govs 11-5 in the opener, with freshman outfielder Ashley Smith being the lone APSU player to finish the game with two hits. Hooper, Taylor and sophomore Beth Carr had one hit each.

Game 2 was almost a carbon copy of Game 1, as the Eagles scored a run in the first inning to jump out 1-0 on the Lady Govs, but it was the four-run second inning ? including three unearned runs ? that set the tone for the rest of the day.

Morehead State would add three more runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to close out the scoring, as the game was called after five inning because of the college eight-run rule.

Austin Peay collected three hits in the nightcap -- singles by Taylor and freshman outfielder Detra Farley with double from junior Krista Henke ? with the Eagles finished with 12 hits.

The two team conclude the OVC series Sunday with a noon single game at Lady Govs Field.
