MURRAY, Ky. ? Austin Peay State University women's basketball team was unable to contain Murray State's three-headed monster in an 87-77 Ohio Valley Conference loss, Saturday night, at the Regional Special Events Center.
Murray State's (9-6, 4-1 OVC) senior trio of Amber Guffey, Ashley Hayes and Paige Guffey combined to scored 77 of their team's 87 points alone. Hayes led all scorers with 29 points, Amber Guffey added 27 points and Paige Guffey finished with 21 points. As a team, Murray State shot 50 percent from the field, making 28-of-56 from the field.
Austin Peay (8-9, 4-2) attempted to counter with four players reaching double-digits in scoring. Sophomore transfer Brooke Faulkner led the Lady Govs with 17 points. Senior April Thomas finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds ? her fourth double-double in the last five games. Sophomore Ashley Herring added 15 points and junior Nicole Jamen chipped in 14 points. All nine APSU players who entered the game scored.
The Racers gained a comfortable cushion in the first half, scoring nine consecutive points to build their first double-digit lead, 30-19, with 5:00 remaining. Murray State carried a nine-point, 44-35 lead into halftime.
Austin Peay clawed back into the contest in the second half, utilizing a 15-6 run over five minutes to slash the lead to two points, 62-60, with 9:46 remaining. Murray State was able to maintain its lead with consecutive field goals and broke the game open for good with another nine straight points over two minutes to take a 12-point, 75-63 lead with 5:59 remaining and they would not be threatened the game's remainder.
Austin Peay returns to action in seven days with a 5:30 p.m., Saturday contest at Tennessee State.
